The PCA TX Annual Meeting weekend began on Friday evening, September 19, when members enjoyed a festive Tex-Mex dinner at Garcia’s Restaurant in San Marcos, Texas.
Saturday morning, 19 members gathered in the San Marcos meeting room at the Wingate by Wyndham hotel and began browsing the selection of weights brought by Guest Artist Eric Jump.
At 10:00 AM President Allen Boyd called the meeting to order, welcoming members and thanking Eric for making the trip from California and for bringing a large selection of paperweights.
President Boyd presented Secretary Claire Terry’s Minutes of the October 26, 2024 Meeting and a motion to approve the minutes was unanimously approved.
Treasurer and Membership Chair Jan Whitley reported the PCA TX and the the Sunny Lou Peer Memorial Scholarship Fund balances. The main expenses have been meeting room fees, the newsletter, and the website. She also reported on our $2,000. donation to the North Carolina Glass Center in Asheville, NC which was 80% destroyed by Hurricane Helene. Current membership stands at 55 representing 25 cities and 7 states.
Facebook Group Chair Jean Cotter reported that the main challenge is having enough paperweights to post. She thanked members for posting and reminded everyone that they can send paperweights photos directly to her email and she will post them. To comply with Facebook rules, our Facebook Group is now called “Members and Friends of the Paperweight Collectors Association of Texas.”
President Boyd announced his appointment of Vice President Ted Glover as Chair of the Nominating Committee to select officers for a two year term. The slate will be voted on at the 2026 Annual Meeting.
For Show and Tell, Jean Cotter presented two new paperweights she found at antique malls: a Murano and an antique Baccarat. Terri Taylor showed a glass art vase by New Zealand artist Lynden Over.
After the lunch break, members reconvened at 1:30 p.m. and Jan Whitley drew the winning tickets for the door prizes.
Mike Taylor presented “Art Glass in New Zealand while on Vacation.” On a trip to Australia and New Zealand in November 2024, he and Terri visited Lava Glass Sculpture Garden in the Lake Taupo Region of New Zealand. They then headed to Auckland Harbor in the North Island of New Zealand where they visited the waterfront shop of glass artist Peter Raos where they acquired a colorful Raos high domed millefiori paperweight.
Guest Dealer Eric Jump presented “The Lasting Legacy of Antique Paperweights: Art, Aesthetics and Identification.” He focused on the most resilient designs in antique paperweights: Scrambles, Concentric millefiori, Spaced millefiori, and Closepacks. He showed multiple examples of each design and explained how each French factory can be identified by their variances in design. He also connected the designs by modern artists to their origins in the classical tradition. He announced that there will be a special collection of antique paperweights at the PCA, Inc. Convention, May 13–16, 2026.
The meeting concluded with a farewell dinner at Grins Restaurant. During the dinner, Eric Jump received a message that David Graeber, Executive Producer, and Daniel R. Co
